Description
The West Virginia University School of Dentistry Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program is designed to prepare residents with in-depth knowledge and skills in all aspects of pediatric dentistry practice in both private and hospital settings and to encourage lifelong learning to contribute to the advancement of the profession. This program is the first and only advanced education program in pediatric dentistry in West Virginia. The program was granted with initial accreditation by CODA in 2024 and the second class with three residents will matriculate in July 2025.
Upon completion of the two-year program, residents will be awarded a certificate of specialty training in pediatric dentistry and will meet the advanced eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Curriculum
Both didactic and clinical curricula are designed to advance residents’ knowledge and skills in all aspects of the specialty. The didactic core is taught by faculty of WVU School of Dentistry and Medicine with additional seminars by guest lecturers. Clinical training involves comprehensive patient care of both healthy patients and patients with special health care needs. Off-service assignments are mandatory and offered at WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital and WVU School of Dentistry. Teaching pre-doctoral students is a part of the residents’ responsibility. All residents are required to conduct their own research project and present their research at a professional meeting.
