- Collaboration: At Carilion dental care, we believe that doctors are not the only professionals who treat our patients, but rather an interdisciplinary team of experts who work collaboratively to provide the best possible care. Our program will strive to develop pediatric dentists who value interprofessional collaboration and team-based patient care that includes patients and their families as part of the team.

- Commitment: It is our commitment to train residents who are not only knowledgeable in pediatric dentistry, but also skilled in practicing dentistry in a humanistic and family-centered manner that considers each patient's individual experiences, needs, and beliefs. Additionally, we respect the diverse backgrounds of our patients, residents, faculty, and students, and we value the role that these experiences play in making outstanding physicians.
- Compassion: In our practice, we are committed to serving our patients with compassion. Throughout the course of their lives, and especially during the toughest times of their lives, we are privileged to be entrusted with their care.
- Curiosity: It is our belief that curiosity is one of the most important factors in training a successful physician. As part of our training program, we encourage our residents to embrace their curiosity by taking a holistic approach to treating patients and solving problems. Residents are encouraged to nurture their curiosity through taking advantage of the research opportunities available in the hospital and in partnership with Virginia Tech.
