Program Length and Number of Positions

One Brooklyn Health (OBH) Pediatric Dental Medicine Resident is a 24-month program beginning July 1 offering seven new positions annually.

Program Type

OBH is a hospital-based 24 month certificate program and qualifies the resident for board certification.

Application

The OBH program participates in the PASS application system and the Match placement process. A personal interview is offered to qualified applicants and is required for consideration for admission. The application and transcript deadline is October 1 of the year preceding matriculation.

Description

The OBH program provides strong clinical and didactic education with the goal of engaging a vulnerable community to address the predictable impact of social determinants of health. The program also strives to create collaboration with departments of medicine to improve the population health of central Brooklyn across various community-based care settings. Resident training focuses on the delivery of personalized care utilizing behavior guidance techniques, sedation, and ambulatory general anesthesia. Our research emphasis is to promote consumer health equity and population health. Resident responsibilities include coordination of care, physical assessment of admitted and ambulatory patients, engaging community-based organizations as well as rotations including pediatric medicine, anesthesia, and emergency medicine. OBH is a consortium of hospitals, ambulatory care centers and a pediatric chronic care center. Our goal is to prepare pediatric dental specialists who can provide high quality care and become leaders in improving the health of communities. The program prepares residents to seek board certification through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and to pursue a variety of career paths.

Curriculum

The OBH Pediatric Dental Residency program curriculum encompasses seminars, clinical rotations, and web-based learning in preparation for the AAPD examination.

Didactic training reflects the comprehensive scope of pediatric dentistry and includes lectures on social determinants of health, pediatric dentistry, growth and development, orthodontics, prevention, pharmacologic behavior management, radiology, oral pathology, research development, and care of patients with chronic health conditions and special healthcare needs. Residents participate in a journal club and present literature reviews on a regular basis. All patient care is under the supervision of board-certified and board-eligible pediatric dentists. Dental specialty consultants from dental anesthesia, prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, oral pathology, and periodontics are available to assure a multidisciplinary approach to education and patient care. Residents are expected to contribute to resident education by presentation of their patient management experiences. Each resident will also complete a research project that involves data collection and analysis with a faculty mentor for presentation at a regional or national dental meeting, such as the AAPD Annual Session. Accommodations are made for residents to attend continuing education courses and board preparatory courses. Residents also participate in a monthly craniofacial conference sponsored by Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine.

Program Stipend and Tuition

All dental residents are members of the Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) and receive the same salary as the medical residents. Post Graduate Year (PGY) levels are defined as a year of service in a residency training program which is certified as having been completed by the appropriate hospital authority, i.e., GPR, AEGD, etc. Residents also receive an additional $2,900 annual food allowance. An additional educational benefit of $1000 per year is provided by the CIR. Residents receive 4 weeks of paid vacation as well as ten federal holidays.

In 2016, OBH was established to preserve and enhance health care services in the communities of Central Brooklyn and is composed of three hospitals and their affiliated facilities, Interfaith Medical Center (IMC), Brookdale Hospital Medical Center (BHMC) and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center (KJMC). All three hospitals have had historic ties in the communities they serve and are working together to build a system that will enable OBH to provide the highest quality and widest breadth of healthcare services to those in need.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

• D.D.S. or D.M.D. from an accredited American or canadian Dental School.
• Eligibility for a limited permit in New York State
• Three letters of recommendation
• Dental school transcripts
• Personal interview
• English language proficiency
• Must report postdoctoral Dental Match Program Code in PASS Application

Applicants must submit the following directly to the program in support of their PASS applications:

• Application-processing fee of $50 payable to “IMC medical staff"
