This is a 24-month program commencing July 1. Two hospital residency positions are available per year.
Program Type
This program is hospital-based postdoctoral program in pediatric dentistry. Certain didactic courses are provided through Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, however, the main focus of the residency is clinical training conducted at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. This program leads to a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry from Northwestern University.

Description
The Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago is the sole pediatric hospital member of Northwestern University’s McGaw Medical Center (Northwestern University’s academic consortium of hospitals). All resident appointments are assigned through the Office of Graduate Medical Education at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.
The resident in pediatric dentistry receives clinical training at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, a unique facility that offers a variety of clinical experiences for the student, including comprehensive patient management, behavior management, hospital dentistry, general anesthesia, sedation, pediatric medicine, growth and development, and orthodontics.
Seminars and clinical practice instructions are provided in the comprehensive practice of Pediatric Dentistry and specialties of pediatric medicine as they relate to dental management of both well and medically compromised children. The student obtains extensive experience in rendering comprehensive dental care to the normal, as well as the medically compromised child, with particular emphasis on physical diagnosis and coordination of dental care with medical or surgical services.
The program has been planned in accordance with the guidelines for postgraduate education of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and is fully accredited by the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation.
Curriculum
The didactic program includes basic science courses in Head and Neck Anatomy, Biostatistics, and Histopathology. Lectures and seminars are presented on the psychological growth and development of the child. Comprehensive principles of clinical practice are offered in lectures and seminars, including patient evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning, behavior management, restorative procedures, anticipatory guidance, and practice management. Residents are required to conduct literature reviews over current research topics, relevant syndromes and oral pathology, and the AAPD Board Certification articles.
Educational experiences are enhanced through clinical teaching as well as lectures and seminar or table clinic presentations. A mandatory research paper serves to complete the requirements for a certificate in pediatric dentistry.
Program Stipend and Tuition
For 2023-2024: First-year stipend is $70,460. Second-year stipend is $73,240.
Facilities
The clinical training for the program is primarily located at the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago outpatient facility in Lincoln Park where a modern, fully equipped pediatric dental outpatient clinic is utilized by residents. Students also spend much of their time in the operating room, procedure suite, and inpatient unit at the hospital. Northwestern Medical School’s facilities are also available as the Children’s residents are also considered Northwestern residents.
Admission Requirements
Applicants for admission to a program of study leading to a postgraduate certificate in Pediatric Dentistry must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an accredited US or Canadian dental school. Because successful candidates in this program serve a two-year hospital residency, they must submit their credentials to obtain a permanent or temporary license to practice dentistry in Illinois. If not yet licensed, temporary licensure is mandatory for successful applicants to the program.
Applicants must initially apply to the program through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS). Upon receipt of the completed application, selected candidates will be invited to the hospital for an interview. It is recommended that the candidate allow one complete day for this visit which will include interviews with various members of the attending staff, visits to the hospital facilities and informal discussions with the residents currently in training. All interviews will be completed during November and December and resident selection is processed through the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program.
Program Strengths
- Opportunity to receive comprehensive training in Pediatric Dental care. This includes didactic education as well as planning and performing clinical treatment for children with compromised physical, mental or medical health.
- The resident experiences a training rotation in general anesthesia, pediatric medicine, and emergency medicine, as well as rotations in selected specialties.
- Ability to perform complete oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia in the operating room.
- Special emphasis in training the residents using various sedation techniques including, but not limited to, nitrous oxide and oral sedation.
- Ability to treat children with cleft lip and palate, craniofacial anomalies and growth related physical problems.
- Extensive hospital experience with emphasis on assimilating and applying medical knowledge as it relates to dental care.
- Quality research experience.
- Orthodontic diagnosis and phase 1 treatment for the
young patient.
