The Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at the Children’s National Hospital offers a three-day externship. Externs will have the opportunity to join the didactic seminars, meet the attendings and pediatric dental residents, shadow at the pediatric dental clinic and the operating room. The externship is only available to current dentists and dental students from CODA accredited programs within the United States. Children's Wisconsin (CW) Pediatric Dental Residency Program offers a well-rounded externship experience for interested applicants. Time spent at CW may include experiences shadowing in the dental clinic including our special needs population, operating room, minimal and moderate sedation cases, craniofacial team, orthodontic procedures, lectures, and on-call services with the current CW residents. The externship is limited to rising fourth-year dental students or practicing dentists seriously interested in applying for pediatric dental residency at CW. Minimum dental school GPA is 3.4 for externship candidates (students at pass/fail dental schools are welcome to submit a CV for consideration).
If you are ready to request an externship, please submit a CV that notes a current GPA, or final dental school GPA for graduated dentists not currently in advanced training to Alice Rascon at ARascon@childrenswi.org on or after January 1. Once qualifications are confirmed and an externship is offered, applicants may request an externship date from the list of dates still available. About twenty externship experiences (three-day or five-day experiences) are offered from March-June, August and September. They are reserved by qualified candidates on a first-come first-served basis.

The Advanced Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC offers a one-week externship. You will have the opportunity to shadow our pediatric dental residents at the pediatric dental clinic at USC and at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the Indiana University School of Dentistry offers an externship for dental students hosted from March 1st through September 1st. We offer externships only on Monday or Wednesday. To apply for the externship, complete the online application. We’ll let you know if you’ve been accepted within five business days of the date your application is received.

JHMC has opted to host our vitural Open House on one day in October. Guests will be invited to participate virtually from the applicant pool. The Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry at the Medical University of South Carolina offers a limited number of one or two day externships in March, April, and May of each year. Externships are limited to rising 4th year dental students and those who have graduated from dental school. Externship Application Steps
The externship is only for observation; you will not be having direct contact with the patient. You can only do a maximum of 3 days.
- Email Ms. Reardon, the Residency Program Coordinator with several tentative dates in which you would like to do the externship, Kelly.Reardon@nicklaushealth.org.
- Complete the attached application and supplemental documentation and submit to Ms. Kelly Reardon. Confirm that all the documentation required has been submitted, as well as the application.
- Once confirmed that all the documentation required has been submitted, Ms. Reardon will send you an email confirming the scheduled dates for the Externship.
Prepare for your Externship
- Upon arrival to the dental clinic (3601 NW 107th Ave, Doral, FL 33178), ask for Ms. Reardon (Residency Coordinator).
- On the day of the externship wear scrubs and your ID provided upon arrival. Please arrive by 8:00AM.

The pediatric dentistry residency program at Primary Children’s Hospital offers 1 or 2-day in-person externships for third- and fourth-year dental students interested in our program who will be active in the upcoming application cycle.
If you are not able to participate in an in-person externship, we will also be hosting a virtual open house on June 10 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm (Mountain Time).

The University of Iowa Department of Pediatric Dentistry will host a virtual open house on Monday, June 30, 2025, at 7:00pm CST. An overview of the residency program will be presented followed by perspectives from current resident representatives and time for questions and answers.
In-person externship opportunities ranging from one to five days are also available to interested 3rd and 4th year dental students.
