  This research brief by the American Dental Association projects future dental workforce composition and trends in 2040. It suggests that ultimately, “the per capita supply of dentists in the United States is projected to increase through 2040.”

• Dental Workforce Trends: A National Study of Gender Diversity and Practice Patterns, Journal of Medical Care Research and Review, August 2020

  This study explores trends in differences in gender among dentists. Of note, it finds that between 2010 and 2016, “the largest growth among female dentists was in pediatric dentistry (44.3% change),” and that proportionally there are more female pediatric dentists than male pediatric dentists.

  This study by Surdu et. al. was published in the July 2019 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association. According to this report, the number of U.S. pediatric dentists is projected to increase by over 60 percent between 2016 - 2030.

The report discusses not only the successes that ACOs have had in terms of improving the health status of their patients, but also  their contracting and payment arrangement details, and each organization’s efforts and challenges to integrate dental care into their overall strategies.
