Pediatric dentistry is the only specialty in dentistry that formally includes the care of people with disabilities in its definition and mission. AAPD is supremely proud of its members – both pediatric dentists and general dentists and other members of the dental team – who provide care to “our nation’s infants, children, adolescents, and persons with special health care needs.”
The following are AAPD policies and best practices related to the care of people with disabilities. They cover topics such as desensitization, care coordination, transition to adult care, and much more.
- Definition of Special Health Care Needs
- Best Practice on Management of Dental Patients with Special Health Care Needs
- Policy on Transitioning from a Pediatric to an Adult Dental Home for Individuals with Special Health Care Needs
- Policy on Ethical Responsibilities in the Oral Health Care Management of Infants, Children, Adolescents, and Individuals with Special Health Care Needs
- Policy on Oral Health Care Programs for Infants, Children, Adolescents, and Individuals with Special Health Care Needs
- Clinical Practice Guideline on Nonpharmacologic Behavior Guidance

If you do not see a program in your area, we recommend searching for the nearest dental schools and dental hygiene programs to find services that meet your needs.
State Disabilities Committees & Agencies
Many states have government agencies and specially formed committees that focus on patients with special healthcare needs and disabilities.
