Qualifying Examination Preparation Course 2022

QE Prep is virtual in 2022, but The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry still wants to be a continued resource for residents as they prepare for the Qualifying Examination. We are providing a road map to help you with your studying. Beginning on March 2, 2022, every week the course speakers will release a 5-10 minute recording on a specific topic. The culmination will be the  AAPD Qualifying Examination Test Review on April 23, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. CST. All speakers will be present and go over questions submitted by the residents from the practice exam. 

Please see the below topics and speakers for the 5-10 minute recordings that will be available in the passport starting March 2, 2022. These recordings are on very specific topics that will help further explain the information for you. What is great about these is they are short, FREE, and you can listen to them anytime!

March 2, 2022: Prevention-Sarvas (fluoride)

March 9, 2022: Radiology-Yepes (radiologic principles)

March 16, 2022: Behavior Guidance-Law (Child Development and Behavior Guidance Techniques)

March 23, 2022: Restorative Dentistry-Nelson (sealants)

March 30, 2022: Pulp therapy/Trauma-Sarvas (trauma update)

April 6, 2022: Non-Pharmacologic Behavior Guidance-Nelson (local anesthesia)

April 13, 2022:  Developing dentition/occlusion-Law (Craniofacial Growth and Development of the Dentition Skeletal) and (Skeletal vs Dental Interventions for the Developing Dentition)

April 20, 2022: Special Health Care Needs-Yepes (syndromes)

March 31, 2022:  Resident questions due based on the 200 question practice exam. Please note you will get access to the exam questions in the QE Prep Bundle in the Passport or via the recording of the QE Prep Course in the Passport.

Each speaker will go over questions submitted by residents from the practice exam and any other questions. Speakers will utilize slides from their formal presentation as supplemental information.  Please note that the main purpose of the Qualifying Examination Test Review is to ask the speakers questions. As part of the bundle or the recording of the QE Prep you will get access to the 200 question practice exam that you will be able to review specific questions on April 23, 2022. This is your time to connect with the experts on the topics and have an four hour exam review!

Meet the Speakers for the  Qualifying Examination Preparation Course

This course will be presented by leading educators and clinicians who will review subjects and materials included in the board examination.

  • Course Chair

    Dr. Travis Nelson

    We are delighted to share that Dr. Travis Nelson will be the new Course Chair for the Qualifying Examination Prep Course. Dr. Nelson has been a speaker for this course since the beginning of the course in 2019 and will begin this  new role  in 2022. Dr. Travis Nelson is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington, and he maintains privileges at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

    Dr. Elise Sarvas

    Dr. Elise Sarvas will be the new faculty speaker joining Drs. Law and Yepes. We are excited to have Dr. Sarvas bring her expertise to this course!  Dr. Elise Watson Sarvas is a clinical associate professor in the Division of Pediatric Dentistry. She currently serves as the pre-doctoral program director and teaches pre-doctoral dental students, dental therapy students, dental hygiene students, and pediatric dental residents at the University of Minnesota.

    Dr. Juan F. Yepes

    Dr. Juan Yepes has been one of the original speakers since the beginning of the course in 2019. We are thankful for his wealth of knowledge and sharing it with the community. Dr. Yepes is a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry and an attending at Riley Children Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana

    Dr. Clarice Law has been another of the original speakers since the beginning of the course in 2019. Dr. Law’s dedication to this course is much appreciated. Clarice S. Law, DMD, MS is a Clinical Professor in the Sections of Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at UCLA School of Dentistry.
