The Contemporary Management of Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate: from Prenatal Consult to Adulthood

Course Overview

Cleft lip and palate is the most common facial difference affecting newborns. Management of this condition is best accomplished by an interdisciplinary team of specialists dedicated to the care of these children and adults. Treatment is staged throughout life and involves surgery, medical and dental management, speech and feeding therapy, as well as continuous health and psychosocial assessment to provide the best coordinated care and quality of life for our patients and families. In this presentation, we will touch on the various aspects of care of patients with clefts, with the main focus being on surgical management.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this lecture, the learner should be able to:

  1. Understand the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of cleft development in a fetus.
  2. Rank as important, the interdisciplinary medical, dental, and rehabilitative management of cleft related problems.
  3. Understand the importance of timing as it pertains to the continuum of cleft care.
Sports Dentistry for the Pediatric Provider

Course Overview

Sports play an important role in the lives of children worldwide. Participation brings with it many many excellent outcomes but it also comes with a risk of injury. Orofacial/Dental injuries are common but largely preventable. This presentation will highlight the overall participation of young people playing sports, the prevalence and incidence of injuries, the prevention of injuries with faceshields and mouthguards, and the unique challenges that treatment of sports injuries in pediatric patients. In addition, Sports Dentistry currently focuses on more that just the treatment and prevention of injuries. Oral health as a focus or total athlete health, the use of mouthguards for concussion protection, the influence of diet and topics such as the use of energy and sports drinks will also be discussed. Sports Dentistry is a topic that is largely ignored until it directly impacts a dentist. It is however something that all pediatric dentists should be aware of and to use this knowledge to best to educate and treat their athlete patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • To learn the overall participation rates children playing sports, the prevalence of dental injuries and the incidence of injuries. 
  • To understand the unique aspects of treating sports related dental injuries from communication with on field helpers to time aspects of treatment, and the basic accepted treatment needs based currently on the IADT 2020 guidelines.
  • To learn the functions and effectiveness of mouthguards, the different types of mouthguards and how to tailor a mouthguard for the unique needs of individual players.
  • To understand how oral health influences total health of young players and to discuss the influence of dietary habits (sports drinks, carbohydrate needs, and the proper use of water as the primary hydration vehicle).
