Enhancing Communication, Reducing Burnout, and
Finding Joy Through Medical Improv: Parts I & II
Medical Improv is an experiential learning strategy rooted in relational skill development and joyful human connection. When facilitated skillfully and integrated with discussion, reflection, and brief didactic framing, medical improv activities become practical tools for strengthening emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork, and leadership. Together, these capacities can enhance therapeutic relationships, manage stress, reduce burnout, and support more rewarding work—especially when interactions with children, parents, and staff involve stressful environments and sensitive or incomplete clinical information.
In Part I, participants will gain a foundation for understanding the vast potential of Medical Improv for improving communication, decreasing burnout, and experiencing joy.
In Part II, they will integrate the philosophy, tools and learnings necessary for application to their practice.
Join Beth Boynton and Ellen Schnur for this interactive, dynamic two-part workshop exploring how the “YES AND” mindset can support pediatric dentists and their teams.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Explain how the “YES AND” mindset in medical improv supports the development of skills and competencies associated with emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork, and leadership.
- Demonstrate how selected medical improv activities can strengthen presence, flexibility, and relational awareness in interactions with patients, families, team members, and colleagues.
- Describe how joyful, experiential learning can decrease stress, prevent burnout, and contribute to more rewarding work.
- Practice strategies for responding more effectively to emotionally charged, unpredictable, or high-stress interactions in pediatric dental healthcare settings.
