Dr. Mike Kanellis: 40 Years of Pediatric Dentistry: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly!
Course Description – Dr. Kanellis will share clinical procedures and approaches he has adopted and refined during forty years of practice to more effectively manage caries in the primary and early mixed dentition. He will discuss his personal shift away from traditional behavior management approaches to more acceptable and equally effective techniques with today's parents and children. Dr. Kanellis will also propose a rational approach to incorporating minimal intervention techniques into your daily practice.

- Integrate strategies to effectively incorporate minimal intervention techniques into their daily practice, including Atraumatic Restorative Treatment, Hall crowns, glass ionomers, and silver diamine fluoride.

- Recognize the importance of considering the extraction of severely decayed or hypoplastic first permanent molars in the early mixed dentition.
Dr. Michael Kanellis is Associate Dean of Clinics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Prior to his appointment to this position, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kanellis attended the University of Iowa where he received his DDS in 1979, his Master’s Degree in Pediatric Dentistry in 1982 and his Master’s Degree in Public Health in 1995. Dr. Kanellis spent 13 years in private practice before joining the faculty at the University of Iowa on a full-time basis in 1994.

Dr. Catherine Flaitz: The Times They Are A-Changin’: So Are the Oral Diseases & the Drugs We Use To Treat Them
Course Description – That the times have changed over the past years for all children and adolescents is an understatement and the diseases in the mouth are no exception. This interactive course focuses on new infectious diseases, recently recognized head and neck manifestations of common diseases, updated causes about well-recognized oral lesions, newly described oral conditions and the latest treatment approaches for symptomatic lesions. A range of soft tissues entities and periodontal diseases are described for this age group. It is important to be familiar with the contributions of new habits and behaviors in the development of some of these oral conditions, along with complications of COVID-19. Characteristic signs and symptoms are highlighted, along with a potential connection to systemic diseases, behavioral health issues and medication utilization. The one thing that has not changed is that a lot is going on in the mouths of our children.

Dr. Peter Guevara: An Ethics Primer with a Discussion of Ethical Concerns Created by the Pandemic and Current Trends in Dental Ethics
Course Description – This presentation will provide an overview of the basic components of dental ethics. Ethics will be defined from the perspective of the American Dental Association and the American College of Dentists. Available dental ethics resources will be highlighted. This presentation will also review and discuss the COVID-19 pandemic from the dental ethics perspective. The ethical concerns created by vaccinations will be reviewed. The effects of the pandemic on dental education, the delivery of dental care, and the effects on the dental workforce will also be discussed. Finally, we will review and have an interactive discussion on current ethical concerns in dentistry.

- Review the basic tenants of dental ethics from the American Dental Association perspective and the American College of Dentists perspective.
- List and describe available dental ethics resources.
- Review and discuss vaccinations within the dental ethics framework.

COL Peter H. Guevara is a 1992 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He has been a member of the United States Army Dental Corps for over 30 years. COL Guevara is currently the Commander of the Fort Carson Dental Health Activity in Colorado Springs Colorado. COL Guevara is a Professor with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and he is the former Dean of the Army Postgraduate Dental School. He is the current Regent for the American College of Dentists Regency 2.

Dr. Sarat (Bobby) Thikkurissy: Six Steps and Strategies for Safe Sedation
Course Description – Safety is the most important objective whenever providing health care, and procedural sedation for pediatric dental rehabilitation is no exception. This course will cover six strategies that can help set up office ‘guardrails’ for procedural sedation, as well as in-office general anesthesia. The seminar will focus on assessment strategies, risk-based decision-making, and understanding how to mitigate unexpected outcomes.

Dr. S.Thikkurissy is a Professor and The Robert Creedon Endowed Chair of Dentistry at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Thikkurissy obtained his D.D.S. from New York University in 1998. He completed the program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD-1) at Wright Patterson and was on active duty in the U.S. Air Force for eight years: including serving as chief of pediatric dentistry at Ramstein AFB in Germany. Thikkurissy obtained his certificate in pediatric dentistry/master’s degree from The Ohio State University in 2003. Thikkurissy is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and is chair of the AAPD Committee on Sedation and Anesthesia, and an AAPD representative on the ADA Committee on Dental Education and Licensure group on Sedation. Additionally, he has served on the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Examination Committee. In 2017 he was named the AAPD Pediatric Dentist of the Year award, and in 2019 was named the Aubrey Rose Foundation 'Above and Beyond Doctor' for his work with special needs populations. He has lectured nationally and internationally and has published in the areas of; morbidities, quality of life, and pain management in children.

Dr. Ronni Brown: Responsibilities and Requirements of Prescribing Schedule II Opioid Drugs
Course Description – Opioid abuse and overdose is at an epidemic level in the country, driven by a myriad of factors including COVID, poverty, homelessness, mental illness, and professional overprescribing of opioids. This course aims to help dentists understand the complex issues associated with substance use disorders and how dental professionals can address the opioid crisis by screening for substance use disorders, referring patients for sobriety and recovery support, and providing evidence-based pain management. In addition, this course contains all the required coursework relating to the prescribing of Schedule II opioid drugs and fulfills the biennial licensure requirement in compliance with the Dental Board of California’s California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 16, Division 10, Sections 1016 and 1017.
Course Objectives: After this course, attendees will be able to;
- Describe the origin and trajectory of our nation’s opioid epidemic
- Describe the requirements of a Schedule II drug classification as defined by the United States Controlled Substance Act
- List commonly prescribed opioids for pain management in dentistry and their side effects

- Discuss the epidemiologic (genetic, environmental, biologic) risk factors associated with substance use disorders
Dr. Ronni Brown earned her dental and master’s degree in public health from UCLA and completed a residency in dental public health from UCSF. Her research on drug-use patterns on “meth mouth” severity has garnered international interest and positioned her as a leading expert on “meth mouth.” She is an international speaker and author of the best-selling book, A State of Decay: Your Dental Guide to Understanding and Treating “Meth Mouth.” With more than 25 years treating patients with “meth mouth”, Dr. Brown understands the behavioral and clinical challenges that the dental team faces when treating patients with substance-use disorders. She is a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, American Association of Public Health Dentistry, and the Dental Speaker’s Bureau. She currently practices at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility in Santa Rosa, California.
