CAPD/ACDP Explores “Evolving Trends and New Paradigms in Pediatric Dentistry”

The Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (CAPD/ACDP) has opened registration for its Annual Conference to be held in Ottawa on September 19, 20 and 21, 2019. Dr. Ian McConnachie, Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, invites you to attend what promises to be an incredible weekend, complete with current and clinically relevant educational sessions, an amazing Welcome Reception in the Haida Gwaii Salon of the Canadian Museum of History, and a lively President’s Dinner and Dance in the Panorama Room of the Delta Hotel.

A number of Conference pre-courses will be offered on September 19, including PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization), Motivational Interviewing Level 1 Workshop, and the Pre-Conference symposium, “The Pediatric Dentist Clinical Role in Endodontic Management of Yong Permanent Teeth”, with Dr. Zafer Cehreli.

On September 20, Dr. John O’Keefe, the Director of Knowledge Networks at the Canadian Dental Association will open the conference with a talk on “The Future of the Profession”. Dr. Clive Friedman, an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto will then present, “Transitioning Special Needs Patients to Adult Practice”.

Also on the morning of September 20, Dr. Kevin Boyd, the attending instructor in the residency training program in Pediatric Dentistry at the Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, will speak on the topic of “Assessing Pre-Apnea in the Child Dental Patient: Then What?”

In the afternoon, Dr. Anne Rowan-Legg of the Clinical Teaching Unit of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario will address “Oral Health in Children with Complex Medical Needs”. This session will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Dr. Clive Friedman, on “Infant Oral Tethered Surgery”. Panelists include Drs. Anne Rowan-Legg and Kevin Boyd.

The September 22, after the Graduate Student Research Presentations, Dr. Kathy Momtahan, the Research Lead at The Ottawa Hospital, will speak about “The Science of Human Factors and Modern Dental Practice - Learning from Other Disciplines”. In the afternoon, Dr. Barbara Sheller, the Chief of Pediatric Dentistry and a staff orthodontist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, will talk about “Applying Contemporary Behavior Science in Pediatric Dentistry Practice”.

The Conference Summit will be delivered by Dr. Jeffrey Turnbull, formerly President of the Canadian Medical Association and now Medical Director of Ottawa Inner City Health, who will speak on “Homelessness and Health: Our collective responsibility”.

Meeting Headquarters is at the Delta Hotels Ottawa City Centre, which is located in the heart of the city and within easy walking or public transportation to the Supreme Court, the Parliament Buildings, Ottawa Art Gallery, shopping and dining in the Byward Market and Rideau Centre, the War Museum, the National Arts Centre as well as the beautiful parks and bicycle paths along the Rideau Canal and in Gatineau, Quebec, just across the Rideau River.
