The AAPD is pleased that bi-partisan legislation to alleviate taxation on Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Program (DFLRP) awardees was recently re-introduced in the U.S. Senate and House. Unless the tax code is amended, individual recipients of DFLRP must pay income tax on their awards. The Senate bill (S. 1080) was introduced by Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and Richard Durbin (D-Ill.), and the House bill (H.R. 1758) was introduced by Rep. (and dentist) Jeff Van Drew (R-N.J. 2nd) and Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-N.Y. 9th). By alleviating taxation of such payments to the individual, this legislation will make the program even more effective in recruiting and retaining pediatric dental faculty. On March 31, 2025, the AAPD spearheaded a letter sent to key House committee chairs and ranking members signed by 14 other groups in the Organized Dentistry Coalition, urging passage of this legislation.
