This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Three new positions are offered each year.

Application

The application deadline is November 1 of the year preceding matriculation. The Stony Brook University Pediatric Dentistry Program will participate in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) PASS program and the National Matching Service program. There is no supplemental application.
Applicants must be graduates of dental schools in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the United States or Canada. Questions regarding the Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry can be directed to:

Curriculum

The Stony Brook University Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program offers a strong didactic component including but not limited to the basic sciences, advanced pediatric dentistry instruction, advanced orthodontic instruction, periodical review sessions, case presentations, research and teaching of pre-doctoral students. The didactic curriculum complements the residents’ clinical experiences. The core curriculum offers the knowledge and experience required in the medical and dental management of the pediatric and special needs patient. In addition, the curriculum meets the eligibility requirements of the ADA Committee on Dental Accreditation Standards for Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Qualifying Examination.

Pediatric Dentistry residents will deliver comprehensive dental care to an ethnically, socially and financially diverse population of outpatients and inpatients. Out-patient facilities include; the School of Dental Medicine, Community Health Centers and Indian Reservations. Faculty from all dental disciplines are on staff at the SDM.

The Pediatric Dentistry program will have a strong community service component. Residents will participate in oral health programs within school based, Head Start and WIC programs and local community health centers. The resident will participate in health care provider, allied health staff and caregiver education and provide oral health services in the underserved areas of Suffolk County.

Program Stipend and Tuition

The annual salaries of the pediatric dentistry residents are competitive with those offered in the greater New York area. No tuition is charged. Current information is available upon request. Housing, parking and meals are readily available.

Facilities

The Advanced Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry is affiliated with two regional medical centers. The Stony Brook University Hospital and Winthrop University Hospital are dedicated to quality patient care in addition to post graduate clinical training, education and research. Both Stony Brook and Winthrop Hospitals include an extensive network of children’s health services including a comprehensive range of pediatricians, pediatric sub-specialists and pediatric residency programs.

A General Practice Residency Program is sponsored by Stony Brook University Hospital in collaboration with the School of Dental Medicine (SDM). The School of Dental Medicine also supports post-graduate programs in Orthodontics, Periodontics and Endodontics and a Master’s/Ph.D program in Oral Biology.

Admission Requirements

• Passed Parts I and II, National Dental Board Examination
  
• Earned a D.M.D./D.D.S. degree, or equivalent
  
• Submit an original dental school diploma directly to the program (not to PASS)
  
• Eligible for state dental license
  
• Graduate of a U.S. or Canadian dental school
