Description
The residency program in Pediatric Dentistry fulfills the requirements for advanced education in Pediatric Dentistry as approved by the ADA Commission on Accreditation. Upon successful completion of the program, the resident is awarded a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
The clinical program offers intensive training in all aspects of pediatric dentistry divided between the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the School of Dentistry and Doernbecher Children’s Hopital. Through the facilities and programs of both institutions, diversified educational experiences are afforded with emphasis in providing comprehensive oral health care for pediatric and adolescent patients, medically compromised and developmentally disabled patients. A multidisciplinary approach integrates the educational, research and service components of this specialty program.
Curriculum
Clinical experiences are equally distributed throughout the curriculum. These experiences occur in a variety of settings: OHSU School of Dentistry, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and OHSU Hospital Clinics.
The program has a strong clinical component based on a foundation of part-time faculty members that come from years of private practice experience. The didactic faculty is composed of OHSU’s School of Dentistry and the School of Medicine’s Department of Pediatrics Faculty.
Education and experience in sedation and anesthesia are provided through seminars, clinical rotations and experience. A one-month clinical rotation in general anesthesia is supervised by the Department of Anesthesiology, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. There is a four-week Pediatric Medicine experience where the resident learns the elements of a physical examination and developmental milestones for all age-groups. There are rotations in the Craniofacial Disorders Clinic, Hemophilia/Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric and Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Craniofacial Surgery
