Description
The pediatric dental residency was started in 1999 and is fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education. The program is hospital and community based, with didactic and clinical training in growth and development, sedation and general anesthesia techniques, behavior management, pulp therapy, oral pathology, restorative dentistry and trauma. Rotations are offered in pediatric medicine, anesthesiology and WIC programs, with a choice of elective during the second year.
The pediatric dental resident will be able to comfortably provide comprehensive oral health care for a wide variety of infants, children and adolescents. The residents provide oral health care services for children living in several health professional shortage areas. Residents will receive extensive operating room and general anesthesia training, as well as office-based oral sedation and deep IV sedation techniques. On call emergency care will be required during the first year and is shared with the GPR residents. During the second year, pediatric residents will only take call once per month. The program follows the guidelines and requirements as set by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Curriculum
The didactics include: literature review, case presentations, research projects, PALS, biostatistics, nutrition, pediatrics medicine, growth and development, conscious sedation, dental anesthesia and orthodontics. The clinical curriculum includes: extensive experience in complete oral dental rehabilitation under general anesthesia, oral sedation and IV sedation in a practice setting. Residents complete a four-week dental anesthesia rotation and a four-week pediatrics rotation. Residents are required to do a research project. A one-month elective rotation will be presented during the second year of residency.
