Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program commencing July 1 of each year. The program offers five new positions each year.

Application

Description

The residency in pediatric dentistry is designed to provide training in comprehensive dental care for children and eligibility for certification by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. The first year addresses dental care for the routine pediatric patient, inpatient and outpatient hospital procedures, pediatric dental medicine, growth and development, preventive dentistry and a rotation in general anesthesia. The second year is designed to increase resident responsibility and challenge the individual through staffing of pediatric specialty clinics and a caseload of increasing complexity. The residency is primarily clinical in nature with seminars designed to support and enhance the experiences gained in providing clinical care. This program provides in-depth clinical, didactic and research experiences and is fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education and the Commission on Dental Accreditation.

Curriculum

The didactic core curriculum includes: oral biology, oral pathology, oral radiology, anatomy, advanced cardiac life support, biostatistics, pediatrics, growth and development, physical diagnosis, practice management, sedation and orthodontics. Residents also participate in seminars on photography, scientific writing, treatment planning, comprehensive care, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusions, and research design. Core courses for pediatric dentistry include lectures in cariology and preventive dentistry, pulp therapy for primary and permanent teeth, restorative dentistry, dental trauma, behavior guidance, moderate sedation, special care patients, dental anomalies and oral pathology.
The clinical curriculum provides for a diverse experience, which includes: comprehensive preventive and restorative care, hospital-based dental care in an operating room setting, sedation and monitoring in the office setting, treatment of patients with oral-facial anomalies, diagnosis and treatment of developing malocclusions and emergency dental care. Consultation and dental care is also provided to patients referred from Pediatric Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology Clinics and the Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit. The residents participate in a four-week rotation in anesthesiology and a two-week rotation in pediatric medicine.
A research project is required, as well as a limited teaching commitment as part of the second-year training.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $35,000. Second-year stipend is $35,000. Tuition is waived for both years. Professional liability, health and life insurance are provided by the university.

Fellowship

Description:
The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Florida College of Dentistry offers a one year fellowship. The fellowship is designed to be an extension of clinical training and practice provided in accredited specialty programs. Three modern outpatient dental clinics and a tertiary care hospital for inpatient care provides ample opportunities and resources for the enthusiastic and motivated clinician. Emphasis is placed upon difficult and complete patient treatment as well as supervision of residents and undergraduate students. The pursuit of research and publications is highly encouraged and mentored by the support of a large and diversified faculty. A high level of independence to pursue individual interests is provided.
