Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24 month program beginning July 1 of each year. Nine new positions are offered each year. An additional third year for a Master’s degree is available.

Description

The Pediatric Dentistry Program offers a strong didactic component including but not limited to the basic sciences, advanced pediatric dentistry, advanced orthodontic instruction, literature review, case presentations, research, and pre-doctoral clinical teaching. The didactic curriculum complements the students’ clinical experiences. The academic and clinical aspects of the program complement each other to fulfill the requirements for the Qualifying Examination of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the CODA requirements for Advanced Education Programs in Pediatric Dentistry.
Clinical experience is gained through treating the well child at the university and the medically, emotionally, and physically compromised child at Tufts Medical Center or Franciscan Hospital for Children in the operating room or at affiliated institutions such as the Cotting School, where physically challenged children are treated.
The Pediatric Dentistry program will have a strong community service component. Students will participate in oral health programs within school-based and local community health centers.

Curriculum

Academic courses include: anatomy, biostatistics, research methods, epidemiology, immunology, microbiology, oral pathology, occlusion, maxillofacial radiology, pharmacology, growth and development, orthodontic theory, advanced pediatric dentistry, literature review, and diagnosis and treatment planning.
Rotations in medicine, anesthesiology, ER are provided.
A research component of the program is required and results in a thesis or manuscript of publishable quality.

Program Stipend and Tuition

No stipend is provided. First year tuition is $46,200 and the second year tuition is $46,200. Tuition increase occurs periodically.

Admission Requirements

• D.D.S., D.M.D. or non-U.S. equivalent
• Official dental and pre-professional education transcripts;
• Three letters of Recommendation: one from the Dental School Dean, one from the pediatric dentistry department chair, and one from an additional professional source;
• Interview (if requested).
• TOEFL for applicants whose first language is not English
Internationally-trained dentists considered if they have taken Part I National Boards and TOEFL
• A recent 2x2 photo

Letters of reference should cover relevant background information and should include an appraisal of the applicant's potential for graduate study. Such letters must be sent directly to the Office of Advanced Education by the signatories.
