Description

The Residency Program in Pediatric Dentistry is a two-year, hospital-based program that is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. The program combines clinical training with studies of the basis sciences as related to pediatric dentistry. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Education and individuals who have completed the program will meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) once they file with the ABPD and pay a filing fee. A Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry is awarded upon successful completion of the program. The program is designed to fully prepare the student for specialty practice, as well as provide educational opportunities for those who desire to pursue a teaching or research career in pediatric dentistry.

The Children’s Hospital ranks eighth nationally by the latest U.S. News & World Report survey. The excellent professional staff and large patient population provide a challenging environment for learning. The children’s Hospital Dental Center is a modern 14-chair in a 10,000 square foot facility equipped with the necessary furnishings. The Dental Center is located on the Fitzsimons Health Sciences campus along with all medical and dental facilities of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Curriculum

The curriculum offers ample opportunities for extending residents’ diagnostic abilities, basic and special clinical knowledge and skills, and critical judgment. It will offer experience in closely related areas to provide residents with the understanding of comprehensive care. The core of the curriculum includes all subject matter indispensable to the development of a competent pediatric dentist. A supporting portion of the curriculum is included to extend residents’ educational experience, enhance their ability to think critically and independently, and to communicate accurate information both clearly and effectively. The residents will learn to work with consultants and clinicians in other dental specialties and in other health fields. Didactic courses, seminars and clinical experiences are provided to develop these necessary skills.

The didactic program includes selected topics in the basic sciences of anatomy, histology, embryology, relevant physiology, pathology, biometrics and research methodology. Lectures and seminars are presented on physical and emotional growth and development of the child, cephalometrics, preventive procedures, cariology and periodontology, biomechanics, limited orthodontics, behavior management, sedation, general anesthesia and other traditional pediatric dentistry courses.

The residents will learn how to critically evaluate scientific literature and are expected to produce a publishable paper prior to graduation.
