Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning in July 1. Up to 10 positions are available each year.

Program Type

University-based certificate program

Application

The program participates in PASS application and MATCH for selection process. The program application deadline for PASS is September 15th of the year preceding anticipated matriculation. A personal interview is offered to qualified applicants and is required for consideration for admission.

Description

The goals of the program are to provide foundation knowledge and educational experiences in pediatric dentistry and provide diverse experiences in all aspects of pediatric dentistry clinical care as recognized by the specialty. The program instills in the resident all the values and beliefs of the health care provider and assures they have the skills to be responsible for care of the growing child.

Graduates become skilled as the primary care provider for pediatric patients from infant, child and adolescent and for the special needs patients. There is a strong hospital component assuring the graduate is able to fully integrate into the medical community. The program provides training through hospital activities at Bellevue Hospital Center, NYU/Tisch Hospital, Rose F. Kennedy Center and Lutheran Medical Center. Rotations are scheduled in hospital departments including Anesthesia, Operating Room Services, Pediatrics (physical diagnosis, pediatric medicine, pediatric subspecialties and infectious disease) Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Emergency Room and the Craniofacial Clinic.

The clinical training provides the graduate with exposure to a diverse socio-economic and multicultural population. Graduates are proficient in all areas of pediatric patient care, including nonpharmacologic and pharmacologic behavior management methods. New York University is a private university in the public service and is committed to community outreach programs for education and oral health. The program experiences foster interest in community service and helps to prepare and encourage the graduate to become committed to dental education. The program is fully accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation and fulfills all requirements for board eligibility as stated by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Curriculum

Emphasis is placed on gaining a critical and analytical attitude toward existing and new information. Seminars and clinical care are evidenced based and used to provide education in the areas of growth and development, child development and its applications to dentistry; health promotion and prevention of disease, patient care and behavior guidance; and conscious sedation techniques.

First-year courses include: core techniques, clinical science seminars, evidenced-based studies, community practice, conscious sedation techniques, orthodontic seminar, literature review, child psychology and development, pediatric dentistry diagnostic seminar, growth and development, and ethical Issues in children. All first-year residents must also successfully complete BCLS, PALS and human subjects training.

Second-year courses include: literature review, clinical sciences seminar, evidenced-based studies, orthodontic seminars, pediatric dentistry diagnostic seminar and related studies in pediatric dentistry.

Core basic science courses are taken during the first year to provide the resident with foundation knowledge for understanding include: craniofacial development and pulp biology, clinical pharmacology, pathogenic biofilms, research design and cariology. Introduction to pedagogy introduces the resident to the aspects of clinical teaching methods, prior to their clinical teaching assignments in the second year.

The pediatric patient population available for care is extensive and diverse, and a wide range of clinical opportunities is available. Residents become skilled in being the primary care provider for the pediatric patient in different clinical settings, including university, hospital, mobile dental van and community health centers. Residents become part of the health care team and work in a multispecialty interdisciplinary group. Care of the special needs pediatric patient is provided on site and at affiliated hospitals.

An extensive outreach program provides unique educational and service delivery experiences for residents and offers an exciting opportunity to work with children in community-based settings, such as DOH Health Centers and on the College of Dentistry’s “Smiling Faces, Going Places” Mobile Dental Care Van. To encourage future participation in academic venues, all residents teach in both preclinic and clinical aspects of the predoctoral program.

A research requirement must be fulfilled for completion of the program. The program is planned in accordance with the current requirements and guidelines for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Pediatric Dentistry as approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Opportunities exist for association and guidance from a wide array of biomedical and clinical experiences.
