This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Three new positions are offered each year.

Description

The program is balanced between dental school didactic support and a Children's Hospital clinical base. The faculty consists of four full-time and four part-time pediatric dentists. Two program faculty are dual trained in pediatric dentistry/orthodontics and five are diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Support faculty in the department includes a craniofacial geneticist, a dentist pediatrician and two orthodontists. The MUSC program has been planned in accordance with the guidelines for postdoctoral education of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and is fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a certificate in pediatric dentistry and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry

Curriculum

The overall philosophy of the curriculum is to educationally prepare residents for the contemporary practice of pediatric dentistry, expanding upon traditional pediatric therapies toward a strong involvement with special patients in the hospital setting and growth and development-orthodontic experiences.

The first year of the program provides a two-month, off-service rotation in pediatric medicine and a two-month rotation through anesthesia. There is a balanced curriculum of didactic and clinical material as each resident receives a broad base of knowledge in pediatric dentistry. Courses and seminars include: case presentation/treatment planning, advanced pediatric dental procedures, orthodontic therapies, cephalometrics, growth and development, biomedical core, oral pathology, clinical dentistry, current literature review, literature review, special patient care and participation on the Craniofacial Anomalies Team.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $37,282.75. Second-year stipend is $39,889.75. Tuition is waived. All equipment, instruments and supplies are provided by the program.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

• D.D.S. or D.M.D from an ADA-accredited dental school
• Dental and preprofessional education transcripts (PASS)
• Three letters of recommendation (PASS)
• Personal interview by invitation
