Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Four new positions are available each year.

The application deadline is November 1 of the year preceding matriculation. Description

This is a two-year hospital-based program offering a composite of clinical experience and didactic instruction at the Pediatric Dental Clinic, Maimonides Medical Center and affiliated institutions (Kings County Hospital, University Hospital of Brooklyn, NYU School of Dentistry, Mount Sinai Medical Center and Cornell Medical Center).

The pediatric dental residents receive extensive clinical training in all aspects of pediatric dentistry, including both well and mentally and physically challenged children, adolescents and adults. Intensive operating room experience, conscious sedation, pediatric emergency treatment and in-hospital patient care is a large component of the program. Our residents also spend some time in a private practice. Both fixed and removable orthodontics are taught.

Following successful completion of the certificate program, the resident will meet eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination and can become board eligible.

Curriculum

Pediatric dental residents receive clinical and didactic educational training from board-certified and board-eligible attending staff members. Residents are required to attend both intra and interhospital lectures and seminars. One-month rotations in anesthesiology, pediatric medicine and pediatric emergency room are included in the program.

Residents are required to complete a research paper each year that is of publishable quality.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year resident stipend is $41,500 with benefits and subsidized housing. Second-year stipend is $43,000 with benefits and subsidized housing.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have available the following items to be considered for admission:

• D.D.S. or D.M..D from an ADA-accredited dental school
• Eligibility for New York dental license
• Dental and preprofessional education transcripts
• Three letters of recommendation: one from applicant’s dental school dean; one from
  department chairman; one from faculty member, director of GPR program or dentist
  familiar with applicant's professional capabilities
• National Board Dental Examination results
• TOEFL scores for foreign applicants
• Personal interview
