Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Four stipend positions are offered each year.

The application deadline is October 1 of the year preceding matriculation. The candidate must submit an application through PASS. The program participates in the Postdoctoral match conducted by the National Matching Services, 20 Holly Street, Suite, 301, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, M4S 3B1; http://www.natmatch.com. The program also participates in the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) program of the American Association of Dental Schools, 1400 K Street, Suite, 1100 NW, Washington DC 20005; http://www.adea.org/pass. All applicants must participate in the postdoctoral match program to be considered.

Description

The Program in Pediatric Dentistry is balanced with significant hospital extramural affiliation at Children's Hospital in New Orleans. The course of study includes seminars in clinically oriented basic sciences and instruction in advanced clinical procedures including minor tooth movement, hospital protocol and general anesthesia, treatment for medically compromised children, courses in research methodology and elective courses for career preparation in academic dentistry. The program has been planned in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation Requirements for Specialty Education Programs and is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.

Curriculum

Required clinical courses include advanced clinical pediatric dentistry, case analysis and minor tooth movement. In addition, one-month rotations are spent in the children’s Hospital Department of Anesthesia, the Children’s Hospital Department of Pediatric and the Emergency Department.

Required didactic courses include: advanced pediatric dentistry seminar, advanced pediatric dentistry research, case analysis and treatment planning, cephalometrics, craniofacial morphogenesis, biostatistics, dental pediatrics and pediatric oral pathology. A research requirement must be fulfilled for certification.

Program Stipend and Tuition

Tuition and fees will not be waived. The present tuition and fees is $4669.50 per year for Louisiana residents and $8,113.50 for non-Louisiana residents. The tuition and fees are subject to revision by the Louisiana State University administration.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

• D.D.S., D.M.D. or non-U.S. equivalent
• Dental and preprofessional education transcripts
• Transcript identification of overall grade point average and class standing
• Three letters of recommendation
• Participation in the National Matching Services Program
• Personal interview
• Non-English speaking applicants require the TOEFL
• Applicants must report NBDE scores/results

Program Strengths
