Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program beginning July 1 of each year. Two new positions are offered each year.

Program Type

Hospital-based certificate program. Residents who qualify will be credentialed to apply to New York State for an Anesthesia Certificate in Sedation.

Description

Residents in pediatric dentistry at Interfaith Medical Center participate in an educational program that is both clinical and didactic. The primary goal of the program is to enable the residents to develop a critical and analytical attitude toward clinical problems, as well as expose them to the most advanced concepts in the dental treatment of children. Upon successful completion of the program, students meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination.

Curriculum

Courses, lectures, literature reviews, seminars, intrahospital departmental rotations, clinical rounds and conferences comprise the didactic portion of the program. A large pool of patients with varied dental needs is available for treatment by the residents. Residents are required to complete a research project and submit a publishable paper.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $51,951 plus benefits. Second-year stipend is $58,262 plus benefits. Third-year stipend is $62,530 plus benefits.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements to be considered for admission:

• D.D.S. or D.M.D. from an ADA-accredited dental school
• Dental and preprofessional education transcripts
• Three letters of recommendation, including one from a faculty member familiar with the
  candidates proficiency in pediatric dentistry
• Personal interview
• Photograph
• Prior general practice residency or practice experience is encouraged

Program Strengths

• Treatment of both in- and out-patients under supervision of attending dentists
• Comprehensive rotations through the Department of Pediatrics
• Emergency room treatment
• Operating room procedures
• Administration of general anesthesia in the operating room; IV sedation in the clinic
• Admission physical examination and history taking while on rotation through the
  departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology
