Description
The Advanced Specialty Education Program in Pediatric Dentistry is fully-accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. Completion of the 24-month certificate program qualifies an individual to limit his/her practice to the specialty of pediatric dentistry and to apply for the qualifying examination of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. An MPH degree is available for qualified individuals but may require an additional time commitment beyond 24 months. MS and Ph.D. programs in basic science areas combined with the clinical certificate in pediatric dentistry are offered for individuals seeking extensive academic and research training.
The program consists essentially of four areas of study: clinical practice (including outreach), research, didactic education, and teaching. In a typical week the student should expect to spend 6 half-days in clinical practice, 1 half-day devoted to research, 1 half-day in didactic education and 1 half-days teaching. With faculty approval, the emphasis placed on each of these areas can be modified depending on students’ research interests.
Curriculum
Scheduled seminars are designed to provide the student with extensive knowledge of pediatric dentistry literature and topics related to the health of children. Topic areas included are physical growth and development of children, speech and language development, behavior management techniques, preventive procedures, -facial growth and development, orthodontic diagnosis and treatment, hospital procedures and pediatric oral surgery.
Weekly treatment planning seminars provide an opportunity for faculty-student exchange regarding treatment alternatives for a variety of clinical problems.
Clinical treatment of a wide variety of pediatric dentistry patients is accomplished in the pediatric dentistry residency clinic and affiliated outreach clinics. Experience in treatment of patients utilizing general anesthesia is obtained at University- affiliated hospitals.
Program Stipend and Tuition
First-year stipend is approximately $6,000.
Second-year stipend is approximately $8,000.
Tuition and instrument fees for most students are approximately $5,000.
Facilities
The majority of the program activities are carried out in Moos Health Sciences Tower. This building, occupied in 1974, houses the School of Dentistry, lecture rooms and offices for some departments of the School of Medicine.
The Division of Pediatric Dentistry has a 16-chair dental student clinic, an 8-chair advanced education student clinic, a library-seminar room, research laboratory and an audiovisual room. Three individual treatment rooms equipped one-way observation windows are located adjacent to the graduate clinic. Each advanced education student is provided with a desk and filing space.
General anesthesia cases are performed both at the University of Minnesota Medical Center and at Hennepin County Medical Center.
The advanced education program also utilizes the pediatric dentistry clinic at Hennepin County Medical Center and the dental clinic at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minn.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to the program must possess the DDS or DMD degree.
The completed application form, along with any other requested information, must be received by the PASS system on or before the specified deadline. Applicants are evaluated on the basis of their class standing, grade transcripts and letters of reference.
Program Strengths
- Diversity of patient-care experiences within a regional referral hospital environment and outreach settings.
- Care of medically-complex patients, including participation in the division’s multidisciplinary cleft and craniofacial clinic.
