Description
The educational objectives of this program are based on oral health care for the infant, child and adolescent and are structured around the relationship of dental health to the patient's past, immediate and future physical and emotional health. The program contains learning experiences that will prepare the graduate to participate in private practice, teaching or research.
The research experience is expected to prepare the student to evaluate literature and provide an understanding of research protocol, basic methodology and accurate reporting of observations. The M.S. program requires a thesis that is constructed under graduate committee guidance.
Both programs meet the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
Curriculum
Formal courses include: biostatistics, cephalometrics, growth and development, microbiology and immunology, orthodontic principles of mechanics, speech development, stomatological diagnosis, nutrition, physical diagnosis, pediatrics, oral pathology, genetics, orthodontics, child psychology, teaching and practice of teaching.
Departmental seminars include: diagnostic evaluations, current literature and research, practice management, preventive orthodontics, prevention and disease control and special topics.
Hospital rotations include: cleft palate-craniofacial anomalies, pediatrics, anesthesiology, oral surgery and emergency room.
