Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a 24-month program commencing July 1 of each year. Four new positions are offered each year.

Program Type

The program is entirely based in a children's hospital, is affiliated with George Washington University Medical Center, and offers a certificate following successful completion of clinical and academic requirements.

Description

The program in Pediatric Dentistry is a children's hospital based program that offers an unusually broad exposure to all relevant components of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to extensive management of primary care patients, the residents actively participate in care for those with special needs and medically compromised. The Children's National Medical Center is an internationally renowned, quaternary care institution that provides experience to dental residents in the multidisciplinary management of patients. The institution also sponsors a large and active Cranio-facial Center, that Pediatric Dental Residents actively participate in. The primary emphasis through all of these activities is to integrate clinical experience with didactic knowledge.

The Pediatric Dental residents are responsible for the comprehensive care of all patients. In order to provide a high level of care, the Pediatric Dental residents have available to them, a large number of other specialists and support personnel, with whom they may consult in the treatment of cases requiring a multidisciplinary approach. The Faculty include an endodontist, periodontist, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, oral pathologists, and orthodontist on staff.

The Pediatric Dental Residents receive extensive exposure to all aspects of pediatric dental care, including: well children, developmentally disable children, minor and major dental traumas, sedation techniques, orthodontics and operating room experience.

Curriculum

An ongoing lecture and seminar series offers approximately 20 hours or more each month of formal presentations and case reviews and includes active participation by staff and residents in an interactive environment. Didactic training includes lectures in pediatric dentistry, growth and development, interceptive orthodontics, prevention, sedation techniques, radiology, pharmacology, oral pathology, biostatistics, orthodontics and special patient care. Journal Club and Literature Review supplement formal weekly Treatment Planning seminars.

Program Stipend and Tuition

The first year resident (PGY 1) receives $40,000 and fringe benefits. The second year resident (PGY 2) receives $42,000 plus fringe benefits. These are subject to annual escalators and cost of living increases.

Facilities

The Pediatric Dental clinic is a modernly designed and equipped facility that has seven fully functional operatories. Each of these treatment areas is equipped for four handed dentistry and has a central nitrous oxide unit. Of the operatories, four are private rooms, each of these having individual x-ray units.

Located within the modern 300 bed Children's National Medical Center, the Pediatric Dental Residency is part of a significant educational, research and teaching institution, that is responsible for the training and education of many varied pediatric sub-specialists. In addition to these resources, residents have available to them all of the ancillary resources within the hospital center.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria, in order to be considered for admission:

1. Must possess either a DDS or DMD degree, or its equivalent
2. Three letters of recommendation, including one from the Chairman of Pediatric Dentistry from their dental school
3. Dental school education transcripts
4. National Board scores
5. Personal interview
6. Participate in the PASS and Match Program
