Description

The Pediatric Dental Residency Program at St. Barnabas Hospital was started in 1995 and is fully accredited by the ADA Council on Dental Education. The program offers clinical and didactic training in all areas of pediatric dentistry including: restorative dentistry, pediatric endodontic techniques, behavior management (pharmacological and non-pharmacological), fixed and removable orthodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, oral conscious sedation, and general anesthesia. St. Barnabas Hospital is a Level I Trauma Center in Bronx, New York. The patient population at the hospital is ethnically diverse and includes: well children, developmentally, physically, medically and mentally compromised children, and adults. The dental department at St. Barnabas Hospital also has an Orthodontic Residency Program, General Practice Residency Program, and Dental Anesthesia Program.

Curriculum

Pediatric dental residents receive clinical and didactic training from attendings representing all dental specialties and medical specialties.

The clinical curriculum emphasizes: clinical techniques in pediatric dentistry, non-pharmacological behavior management, nitrous oxide sedation, oral conscious sedation, intravenous sedation, general anesthesia, and public health. St. Barnabas Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center, resulting in extensive exposure to trauma management. Hospital rotations include: pediatric medicine (inpatient and outpatient clinics), general anesthesia, ENT clinic, audiology, infectious disease, and pediatric emergency department. Residents also rotate through the dental department at the Rose F. Kennedy Center for patients with special needs. Residents participate in monthly outreach at area Head Start Programs, Community Health Fairs, and the Bronx Zoo. Residents are also encouraged to participate in international outreach programs, for which one week is allotted.

The didactic curriculum emphasizes: literature review, pediatric dental textbook review, orthodontic theory, orthodontic management, oral medicine, pharmacology, traumatology, growth and development, restorative techniques, special needs patients, and practice management. Residents present cases of interest in monthly case presentation meetings. Treatment planning seminars are held bi-weekly. Clinical research, leading to a paper of publishable quality, is also a requirement of the program. Accommodations are made for residents to attend Continuing Education course as well as board preparatory courses. Residents also participate in a monthly Craniofacial Conference sponsored by Columbia University’s College of Dental Medicine.

To foster preparation for a career in private practice, elective time is scheduled monthly to visit any pediatric dentist in private practice. Accommodations will be made for residents requesting to visit an office in their home state.

With this comprehensive background, the program promotes completion of the board certification process by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year stipend is $46,558. Second-year stipend is $49,398. There are 4 weeks of paid vacation, as well as holidays. Residents receive a stipend to attend the annual AAPD meetings. There is also a daily stipend for food, supplied via electronic swipe cards during the two year residency.
