Program Length and Number of Positions

This is a two-year program beginning the first of July of each year. Six positions are authorized for the first-year class.

Description

The postgraduate program is based at the College of Dentistry. Basic science and clinical instruction are provided by the faculty of the College of Medicine and the College of Dentistry. Clinical experience is gained in the postgraduate clinic at the College of Dentistry, the Howard University Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children, Spanish Catholic Center, and Children's National Medical Center. Howard University Hospital hosts the Pediatric Medicine and Emerchency room rotations. Experience in anesthesia is obtained at Children's National Medical Center. Upon completion of the program, the student receives a certificate in pediatric dentistry and meets educational requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Curriculum

Required courses include Orthodontic Theory, Roentgenology and Cephalometrics, Pedodontic Seminar, Biostatitics, Histopathology, Advanced Cephalometrics, Growth and Development, Internal Medicine, Mixed Dentition Seminar, Craniofacial Genetics, Pharmacotherapcutics, Head & Neck Anatomy & Anthropology, Pediatrics, Anesthesiology, Orthodontic Case Analysis Seminar, Practice Organization, Pedodontic Case Analysis Seminar, Surgical Orthdontics, Periodontics and Occlusion, Advanced Radiographic Interpretation and Diagnosis, Dental Education, and Pediatric Dentistry Board Literature Review. A thesis based on a research investigation is a requirement for the certificate in pediatric dentistry.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First-year tuition and fees is $26,268. Second-year tuition is $24,683.

First-year stipend (approximately) is $5,000. Second-year stipend (approximately) is $7,000.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have available the following items to be considered for admission:

1. DDS, DMD, or non-U.S. equivalent from an accredited dental school
2. Dental and preprofessional education transcripts
3. 3 letters of recommendation
4. National Board of Dental Examination Scores (Part I and Part II)
5. Non-English speaking applicants require the TOEFL/must demonstrate proficiency in the English Language and mastery of concepts of procedures which are basic to the practice of dentistry, if the applicant possesses a foreign dental degree
6. Must possess at least a 3.0 GPA in dental school
