Description
The Seattle-based Graduate Program in Pediatric Dentistry fulfills the requirements for advanced education in pediatric dentistry as approved by the ADA Commission on Accreditation. In this program, both a Master of Science degree and a Certificate in the Specialty of Pediatric Dentistry are awarded. With the addition of a third year, the student is able to pursue a Master in Public Health degree or Academic Leadership training.
This program is a unique partnership between the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington and the Department of Dentistry at Seattle Children's Hospital (SCH), which is located 2.3 miles from the School of Dentistry. Through the facilities and programs of each institution, diversified educational experiences are offered that emphasize comprehensive oral health care for pediatric, adolescent and medically, mentally and emotionally complex patients. A multidisciplinary approach permeates the educational, research and service components of this specialty program.
The Yakima-based program is a community-based pediatric dentistry residency track in a migrant health center in Yakima County, Washington, about 150 miles east of Seattle. The curriculum is consistent with ADA Commission on Accreditation requirements using both distance learning and clinical rotations in Yakima and Seattle.
Curriculum
Seattle-based programs: Clinical experiences are distributed throughout the curriculum. These experiences occur in a variety of settings: The Center for Pediatric Dentistry University of Washington outpatient clinic, SCH operating rooms (at The Center for Pediatric Dentistry and at the main SCH campus), Odessa Brown Community Clinic and the Yakima Valley Farm Workers' Clinic.
The first year of the program is the same for both tracks. Required coursework includes: pediatric dentistry seminars and clinic, biostatistics, epidemiology, orthodontic theory, orofacial biology, dental radiology, dental photography, applied psychology, dental plaque diseases, research, scientific methodology and oral histology. Beginning in their second year, 3-year program students apply to the School of Public Health, and if accepted, take courses through the School of Public Health in pursuit of the M.P.H. They complete their clinical commitments over the final two years of the program.
Education and experience in sedation and anesthesia are provided through courses and clinical rotations. A four-week clinical rotation in general anesthesia is supervised by the UW Department of Anesthesiology at SCH. In addition, experience with IV sedation will be provided in conjunction by oral surgery faculty treating children in the facility.
The Graduate Program in Pediatric Dentistry at the University of Washington is designed to satisfy the academic requirements necessary to award the Master of Science in Dentistry to its graduates. Research experience begins in the first quarter of the curriculum with a review of potential research topics from a list generated by the faculty.
Structured research requirements continue throughout the academic period. A research proposal is developed, approved, implemented, completed and a thesis is submitted that leads to the master's degree (MSD or MSD/MPH).
Yakima-based program: Clinical experiences are distributed throughout the curriculum. These experiences occur in a variety of settings: Yakima Valley Farm Workers Clinic’s ViewCrest center, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital (YVMH) operating room, Children’s Village multi-specialty center for children with special needs, University of Washington clinics, SCH Emergency Department, and Central Washington Family Medicine Clinic.
Residents participate in seminars via distance learning on topics
including: biostatistics, epidemiology, orthodontic theory, orofacial biology, dental radiology, dental photography, applied psychology, dental plaque diseases, research, scientific methodology and oral histology.
Education and experience in sedation and anesthesia are provided through courses and clinical rotations. A four-week clinical rotation in general anesthesia is supervised by Physician Anesthesiology Associates at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.
