Three letters of recommendation. One of these should be from the director of the applicant’s undergraduate Pediatric Dentistry department or the Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the applicant’s dental school. These letters may come through PASS or sent directly to the department.

Description

The Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is a clinically oriented program of two years (totaling 24 months) duration. All aspects of in-patient and out-patient hospital dentistry are incorporated into the program. Training in preventive, interceptive and corrective orthodontics is provided but comprehensive orthodontics is not taught. The resident will receive extensive experience in diagnosis/treatment of dento-facial trauma, conscious sedation and restorative Pediatric Dentistry.
The program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association Commission on Dental Education and upon completion the resident is eligible to challenge the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification examination.

Curriculum

The training material is presented in the Seminar format. Seminars are held several times per week. Curriculum material is in accordance with the Commission on Dental Accreditation Advanced Pediatric Dentistry curriculum requirements. Seminar formats vary but include literature review, lecture, group discussion and electronic guided learning. Off service rotations in Pediatric Medicine, Anesthesia, Emergency Room experience, and undergraduate dental school teaching are required. Individualized electives in Oral/maxillofacial surgery, ENT, Cleft Palate, research or community service are offered in the second year.

Program Stipend and Tuition

First year stipend is $46,716.80. Second year is $47,985.50. No tuition is charged.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must fulfill the following requirements and provide documentation of previous experience to be considered for admission:
• Passed Parts I and II, National Dental Board Examination
• Earned a D.M.D./D.D.S. degree, or equivalent
• Eligible for state of Pennsylvania dental license
• TOEFL scores for applications whose first language is not English
• Dental and pre-professional education transcripts, either directly from the institution or through PASS
• Personal interview in Pittsburgh, PA
• Be a citizen of the USA or Canada or have a permanent immigration card.
• Earned a DMD/DDS degree, or equivalent from a North American Dental School

Program Strengths

Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh has ranked in the top 15 Pediatric Hospitals for the past two decades. The hospital faculty and attending staff are internationally recognized for excellence in Pediatric Medicine.
