Description

The program in pediatric dentistry consists of a hospital portion at Children’s Hospital, a clinic portion located at the Children’s Center and a didactic portion at Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy. The program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the United States Department of Education. Upon completion, the resident receives a certificate in pediatric dentistry and meets eligibility requirements for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry examination. With additional clinic time, course work, and research, the resident may become a candidate for a Master of Science in Public Health through Wayne State University.

Curriculum

The curriculum is a balanced mixture of didactic and clinical training in pediatric dentistry and includes experiences in pediatric/adolescent restoration dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, and endodontics. Also included are rotations in anesthesia, pediatrics, cardio/respiratory care, emergency department, craniofacial and operating room. The patients of the dental clinic include children/adolescents who are normal and healthy; children/adolescents with early childhood caries; children/adolescents with behavior management problems; and children/adolescents who are medically compromised or mentally and/or physically handicapped. Students are encouraged to take the written portion of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry exam.
