The two-year pediatric dentistry residency program, started after graduation from dental school, immerses dentists in scientific study and clinical experience. The trainee learns advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures, along with child psychology and clinical management, oral pathology, child-related pharmacology, radiology, child development, management of oral/facial trauma, care for patients with special needs, conscious sedation and general anesthesia.

Program Length and Number of Positions

Twenty-four month program commencing July 1 of each year (orientation one week earlier) with five new positions offered each year.

The advanced education program in Pediatric Dentistry is a postgraduate level certificate program designed to produce academically-based clinical pediatric dentists who may choose to pursue a career in private practice or academic dentistry. Instruction is provided through the academic facilities and the Faculty of Columbia dental school, medical school, school of public health, Children’s Hospital, and its enterprise. Individuals who successfully complete this Program will meet the requirements set forth by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and will be eligible to sit for the qualifying examination and certification. This Program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association and is affiliated with the Columbia University Medical Center.


Curriculum includes rounds, seminars, and conferences to ensure that the resident achieves a thorough understanding in the biomedical and clinical sciences. Topics include research methodology, biostatistics and clinical epidemiology, histology, embryology, genetic growth and development, oral pathology, behavior management, preventive dentistry, procedural sedation and anesthesia, pediatric medicine, and practice management.

Program Stipend and Tuition

Residents receive the same salary as medical residents. For the academic year 2017-2018, stipends were 64,271.00 and 67,625.00, for program years one and two, respectively. Tuition is waived.
