The two-year pediatric dentistry residency program, started after graduation from dental school, immerses dentists in scientific study and clinical experience. The trainee learns advanced diagnostic and surgical procedures, along with child psychology and clinical management, oral pathology, child-related pharmacology, radiology, child development, management of oral/facial trauma, care for patients with special needs, conscious sedation and general anesthesia.

Founded in 1994 by Dr. Silvia Perez-Spiess in southwest Brooklyn, the NYU Lutheran Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry (AEPD) Program is fully accredited by the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). The program provides a strong didactic and clinical foundation. In 2003, the program expanded to Providence, RI and then established programs at 12 additional sites across the country. Affiliated sites are mainly within federally-qualified health centers (FQHCs) or hospitals. This innovative program is a hybrid blend of a strong distance learning didactic curriculum with extensive clinical experience. Distance-based didactic learning is achieved through asynchronous web-based education modules, via the Sakai platform, and a state-of-the-art video teleconferencing (VTC) system that connect residents and faculty from all sites. Faculty experts lecture from around the country. Significant emphasis is on hospital dentistry, pediatric sedation, pediatric general anesthesia, and pediatric medicine. Graduates are trained to be an integral part of the medical team/hospital environment. Additional experiences include: pediatric preventive and restorative dentistry, disease management of early childhood caries, orthodontics, treatment of craniofacial conditions, research, ethics, and policy advocacy. Upon successful completion of all requirements, the resident is awarded a Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and meets the advanced education eligibility requirements of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.
MD residents rotate through Peninsula Regional Medical Center and Delmarva Surgery Center to perform dental rehabilitation general anesthesia cases. They gain skills in managing orofacial trauma cases and other emergency presentations. They also rotate through seasonal worker camps and to school based programs providing screening services and sealant applications to children.
Residents are exposed to the Cleft Palate Team at the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute.
Each resident typically completes over 50 cases in the OR and more than the CODA-required 25 oral conscious sedations as operator and 25 cases as the monitor. The patient population is primarily low-income, underserved children and families from communities in the three lower counties the Eastern Shore. Patients are Hispanic, African-American, White/non-Hispanic,or Asian descent, nearly 25% have health care needs.


The program revolves around both well children and those who are special needs, medically compromised, physically, mentally or developmentally challenged, or those impacted negatively by myriad social determinants of health. Graduates are well prepared to be contributing members of the health care team in the hospital environment or community setting. The majority of the didactic curriculum is completed in the 1st year.
First-year residents are assigned rotations in pediatric medicine, general anesthesia, emergency medicine and on-call services. The distance learning curriculum occurs via live video teleconferencing (VTC) and asynchronous web-based modules (Sakai). There are multidisciplinary and specialty-focused seminars with participation by general dentistry, endodontic, and dental anesthesia residents. Courses include: oral biology, pediatric anesthesia, physical diagnosis, medical emergency and behavioral management, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, craniofacial development and research methods and materials. Weekly literature review sessions prepare residents for the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry written qualifying examination and oral boards.
In year two, residents may rotate through local Head Start/early child care centers or school-based programs. As a merit-based enhancement and with prior approval, 2nd year residents may participate in a one-month resident exchange at another NYU Lutheran pediatric training site.
Residents complete a research project which is presented at the AAPD Annual Session. They may also present cases and discuss treatment plan options via live VTC sessions. During the last months of training, residents may visit private offices to observe, assess, and evaluate practice management methods and operations.
Program graduates have gone on to successful careers in academic leadership, pediatric residency programs, hospital dentistry, community health centers, and private practice.

Program Stipend and Tuition

For 2016, the stipend for first-year residents is $62,652 plus fringe benefits. Second-year residents receive a stipend of $67,076 plus fringe benefits with an additional $2,500 for the chief resident(s) at each site. Fringe benefits include medical and dental insurance, prescription drug plan, $150 for PGY1 books, $1,000 for PGY2 course registration, and nine holidays, four week vacation, four educational days, twelve sick days (accrued one day per month) per year.

Admission Requirements

• DDS or DMD degree from an ADA-accredited American or Canadian dental school
• Must be eligible for the Maryland limited dental license ( )
• Must have passed Part I of National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) prior to application and Part II by start of residency
• ADAT is not required
• Dental transcripts through PASS
• Three Professional Evaluation Forms (PEF) through PASS
• All candidates must be proficient/fluent in the English language
