The Power of Stem Cells Found in Teeth
The study of stem cells might benefit patients with incurable diseases and scientists are working hard in laboratories across Boston to investigate the power of stems cells found in teeth. Researchers at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine hope stem cells extracted from teeth can lead to an alternative to root canals. Numerous companies store dental stem cells from baby or wisdom teeth. President of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, John R. Liu, offered a few words to curious parents about the cost of storing stem cells.
“What these companies out there are actually doing is just storing potential stem cells for you,’’ he said. “They have no ability to do anything with the stem cells other than to store it for you until such time as research reaches the point of being able to use these stem cells.’’
