When an impact to the head is forceful enough to knock out a child’s tooth, the child needs to be assessed neurologically, according to Joel Berg, D.D.S., president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

A recent study by Case Western Reserve University researchers shows a link between obesity and cavities among children living in poverty. The study found that as those children age, the risk of obesity increases, as do the number of cavities.

On December 19, Marketplace.org issued its morning report regarding pediatric dentistry, and how it is the fastest growing dental specialty. Mark Garrison with Marketplace also visited the Manhattan practice of AAPD national spokesperson Dr. Jed Best, as well as NYU’s College of Dentistry, where Mark visited AAPD National Spokesperson Dr. Amr Moursi.
 
Pediatric oral health is defined under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) as an essential health benefit. Health insurers in the individual and small group markets, inside or outside of state health insurance exchanges, must offer qualified health plans that cover ten categories of essential health benefits. It is estimated that 3 million children will gain dental benefits through the health insurance exchanges by 2018.

According to DentistryIQ.com, this campaign is “starting a nationwide conversation on declining oral health.” The campaign stands on four foundations of good oral health care: brushing, flossing, using fluoride, and visiting the dentist regularly. The Kids’ Healthy Mouths website, 2min2x.org, features music and videos designed to inspire kids to brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes.

AAPD President Dr. Joel Berg was interviewed by CNN regarding new analysis on dental fillings in children that suggests non-metal fillings may contribute to behaviorial problems. The study authors caution that their results only point to an association; they say their analysis does not prove that BPA causes any behavior changes.

The ABC News story appeared on both “Nightline” and “World News with Diane Sawyer.” The report alleged that, in some cases, undertrained dentists motivated primarily by profits are unnecessarily sedating young patients for routine procedures.

Have you visited the new http://www.aapd.org yet? The upgraded site launched earlier this week. The previous incarnation of http://www.aapd.org has been in service since 2002. AAPD staff and AmericanEagle.com worked hard to update and redesign the site with an all new look and feel and upgraded functionality. ​

The AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center is pleased to announce the publication of a technical brief: "Considerations for Caries Risk Assessment in an Essential Health Benefits Dental Plan for Children," which provides an overview of the current research on caries risk assessment, and its potential to improve its use in clinical care of children.
 
More than 90 AAPD members from 24 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Academy's annual Congressional Lobby Days in Washington, D.C., on March 7-8, 2012.
 
The AAPD, the American Dental Association, and other members of the Organized Dentistry Coalition (ODC) commented to the federal Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) on Jan. 31, 2012, in response to draft guidance from this agency on essential health benefits (EHB).

On March 5, 2012, the AAPD filed a written statement for the record with the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. This was in response to the subcommittee’s Feb. 29, 2012, hearing on Dental Crisis in America: The Need to Expand Access.
 
On March 6, the New York Times ran a front-page story regarding the increasing rate of preschoolers with dental decay. As a result, AAPD spokespeople were quoted throughout the piece, including AAPD President-Elect Dr. Joel Berg and AAPD members Drs. Jed Best, Rochelle Lindemeyer, and Man Wai Ng.
