2017-2018 AAPD President Jim Nickman of Lino Lakes MN, and his wife Jean, have established a new grant award for the Academy’s Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Foundation which helps put pediatric dentists one big step closer to providing dental homes for 1 million unserved children by 2022.
 
The AAPD board of trustees wishes to recognize those going above and beyond in our profession and in our community. We will be celebrating their achievements throughout the meeting.

In late 2017 the AAPD along with the ADA and the Organized Dentistry Coalition wrote a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requesting appointment of a new Chief Dental Officer (CDO) and also to prioritize oral health services in a manner equal to medical services.

On September 13, 2017, the AAPD and ADA wrote the Chair and Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee in support of reauthorization of the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
 
The AAPD is pleased that the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded 10 dental schools or pediatric dental residency programs grants for faculty loan repayment.

New report by leading dental associations also shows dental sealants are more effective than other treatments in reducing and preventing childhood cavities.
 
The Treasury Department and IRS released on July 8, 2016 proposed regulations relating to premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. This included a rule clarifying the inclusion of subsidies for stand-alone pediatric dental plans, as part of the premium tax credit, for plans purchased in a Health Insurance Exchange.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the leading authority on children’s oral health, announced that Robin Wright, Ph.D., has been named assistant director of the AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center.
 
On December 12-13, 2014 the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed the massive “cromnibus” $1.1 trillion bill to fund the federal government for fiscal year (FY) 2015. The government is operating under a CR through December 17 until the President signs the bill.
 
The AAPD and CMS have partnered in the past to provide members with webinars that provide a comprehensive overview of Medicaid program integrity, common compliance vulnerabilities, and benefits derived from developing or improving a compliance program. The AAPD has also worked closely with CMS and the ADA on compliance issues to help ensure that provider audits are fair and reasonable.

In Nov. 2013 the AAPD sent letters to legislators in Florida and Ohio in support of pending non-covered services legislation. This legislation would prevent insurers from setting prices for services their plans do not even cover. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the authority on children’s oral health, will host its 65th Annual Session in San Diego at the San Diego Convention Center and San Diego Marriott and Marina from May 24th- 27th. More than 5,000 participants will be attending this year’s event.
 
Have you visited the new http://www.aapd.org yet? The upgraded site launched earlier this week. The previous incarnation of http://www.aapd.org has been in service since 2002. AAPD staff and AmericanEagle.com worked hard to update and redesign the site with an all new look and feel and upgraded functionality. ​

The AAPD Pediatric Oral Health Research and Policy Center is pleased to announce the publication of a technical brief: "Considerations for Caries Risk Assessment in an Essential Health Benefits Dental Plan for Children," which provides an overview of the current research on caries risk assessment, and its potential to improve its use in clinical care of children.
 
More than 90 AAPD members from 24 states and the District of Columbia participated in the Academy's annual Congressional Lobby Days in Washington, D.C., on March 7-8, 2012.
 
The AAPD, the American Dental Association, and other members of the Organized Dentistry Coalition (ODC) commented to the federal Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight (CCIIO) on Jan. 31, 2012, in response to draft guidance from this agency on essential health benefits (EHB).

Dental caries (tooth decay) is one of the most common health problems impacting young children’s primary teeth.[1] In fact, nearly 40-to-50 percent of children will be affected by tooth decay by age five [2] and according to the latest Surgeon General’s report, Oral Health in America, more than 51 million school hours are lost each year to dental-related conditions.
 
On March 5, 2012, the AAPD filed a written statement for the record with the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. This was in response to the subcommittee’s Feb. 29, 2012, hearing on Dental Crisis in America: The Need to Expand Access.
 
On March 6, the New York Times ran a front-page story regarding the increasing rate of preschoolers with dental decay. As a result, AAPD spokespeople were quoted throughout the piece, including AAPD President-Elect Dr. Joel Berg and AAPD members Drs. Jed Best, Rochelle Lindemeyer, and Man Wai Ng.

According to Haugseth, “Children exhibit teeth grinding very commonly. We see it in children younger than 7-8 years old often. A lot of children will stop grinding once their six-year permanent molars erupt. Their permanent teeth bite begins to establish itself once those molars erupt.”
