Investing In Research

HSHC believes that by investing in research we could lead the way to reducing or even eliminating oral health disease in children in the future.

HSHC recognizes that the clinical practice of pediatric dentistry has to be driven by science and evidence-based dentistry. Where the evidence or science is lacking, research needs to be conducted to answer the relevant questions that arise in clinical practice. HSHC Oral Health Research Grants are designed so that the best and the brightest will have the opportunity, and the incentive, to conduct research that will have a significant impact on the oral health of children.

HSHC Oral Health Research Grants are multi-year awards of up to $100,000 per year for a three-year time period. These grants can be applied to research initiatives consistent with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's Research Agenda, which includes:

  • Transmission, etiology, risk assessment, early detection, prevention, and management of caries
  • Caries management using antimicrobials, fluorides, and remineralizing agents
  • Disparities and barriers to accessing dental care
  • Development of a national databank on pediatric dental issues
  • Efficacy of infant oral health (ie. First dental visit by age 12 months)

In the context of the AAPD Research Agenda, special consideration will be given to research projects designed to better understand dental caries and its impact on child oral health and/or to evaluate performance of dental care programs targeting under served and limited access children.
