Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children was established in 1987 to support and promote education, research, service and policy development that advance the oral health of infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health care needs. Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children is dedicated to advancing research related to improving children's oral health and the specialty of pediatric dentistry. To fulfill part of the mission, Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children supports the following research awards.

Graduate Student Research Awards (GSRA)

In 1989, Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children began financially supporting the Graduate Student Research Awards for current and recent pediatric dentistry postdoctoral students/residents. Following an application process, the Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Committee on Scientific Affairs selects eight finalists to present their research at the AAPD Annual Session. Finalists receive complimentary Annual Session registration for themselves and a guest, travel expense reimbursement and a cash award and plaque at the Annual Session. A matching cash award is given to each finalist's training program. The deadline for this award is December 5, 2008. NuSmile Primary Crowns is the sponsor the Graduate Student Research Awards. Ralph E. McDonald Award

Following oral presentations at the Annual Session, this award is presented to the Graduate Student Research Award recipient judged to have accomplished the most outstanding research project. The recipient receives an additional cash award. Established in 1991, the award honors Ralph E. McDonald, AAPD past-president and editor emeritus. The Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Committee on Scientific Affairs selects the recipient. The Indiana University of Pediatric Dentistry Alumni Association graciously supports this award.

Foundation Research Awards (FRA)

Four awards are presented annually to clinicians, researchers or academicians in pediatric dentistry for outstanding research efforts. Recipients receive complimentary Annual Session registration for themselves and a guest, travel expense reimbursement, a cash award and a plaque at the Annual Session. The recipients are selected by the Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children on Scientific Affairs and are asked to present their research at the Annual Session. Based on these presentations, an overall Foundation Research Award winner is selected and presented an additional cash award. The deadline for this award is December 5, 2008. Paul P. Taylor Award

Following oral presentations at the Annual Session, this award is presented to the Foundation Research Award recipient judged to have accomplished the most outstanding research project. The recipient receives an additional cash award. Established in 2007, the award honors Paul P. Taylor. The Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children Committee on Scientific Affairs selects the recipient. The Baylor Pediatric Dentistry Alumni Fund graciously supports this award.
