Summary

Course Description

This course is specially designed for the pediatric dental team to increase their knowledge and understanding of office preparation and medical emergencies that may occur during a sedation visit. A review of the pharmacology and clinical application of oral sedation and the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen will be included. Participants will learn how to organize and prepare the office for an organized response to a medical emergency and the important role of the dental assistant in the dental team. There will be hands-on experiences geared toward the dental assistant where they rotate through multiple stations including emergency airway rescue techniques, monitoring, basic life support, and the appropriate use of restraining devices.

This four-hour workshop on Saturday morning is designed for a hands-on experience for the dental assistant. Participants will rotate through multiple stations including emergency airway rescue techniques, monitoring, basic life support, and the appropriate use of restraining devices.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the participant should have a better understanding of the:

  • The continuum of sedatives and anesthesia
  • The anatomical, physiological and pharmacological issues specific to the pediatric patient 
  • Anatomical and pharmacological aspects of local anesthesia
  • The different types of oral sedatives and the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation
  • What types of emergency drugs and equipment are available and their uses
  • How to prepare the pediatric dental office for an organized response to a medical emergency
  • Diagnosing and assisting in the management of sedative/medical emergencies
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics and the AAPD joint guidelines of monitoring and management of pediatric patients during and after sedation for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

Cancellation
Full refunds for registration minus a $150 cancellation fee will be given only if written notice of cancellation is received 30 days prior to the course. For one-day courses, the cancellation fee will be $75 with the same rules applying. A 50 percent refund will be given if written notice is received up to two weeks prior to the course. No refunds will be given within one week prior to the course. No refunds will be given for no-shows.
