AAPD / HSHC Proudly Announces Five Scholarships for the Master Clinician Program
Due to the overwhelming continued success of the scholarship program of the Pediatric Dentistry Master Clinician Program, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children: The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is pleased to again offer five scholarships to be part of this exciting program for 2010.
A switch from an office practice to an academic career may seem like a daunting challenge -- it needn’t be.
An academic career provides the practicing dentist a new opportunity to utilize their experiences in shaping the careers of the aspiring professional. Dentists that teach also have a greater opportunity to develop new techniques and innovations in care through research and scholarly activities and can also influence national dental education policies through service with the AAPD, ADA, ADEA, HRSA and NIDCR.
Other benefits of an academic career include improving access to oral health care through community service, mentoring of residents, full- or part-time employment with benefits and personal and professional growth.
Selected candidates will attend the Academy for Academic Leadership’s Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) in the Health Professions Program and will have the opportunity to attend the AAPD Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry course in the location of their choice.
ITL scholars benefit from a hands-on experience with key teaching tasks such as evaluations, lecture presentation skills, test construction, small group learning and working with difficult students. Additionally, ITL scholars learn cognitive theory, motivation strategies, learning styles, education best practices and a host of other skills. Sessions on research, finding an academic position, strategies for getting published and work-life issues are also offered.
The ITL program consists of six and a half days of learning experiences. This is divided into two phases that are conducted approximately two months apart. ITL scholars complete between-phase activities to reinforce and augment program content.
The ITL is conducting the 2010 program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill - School of Dentistry. Phase I is scheduled from August 19 - 22, 2010 and Phase II will be conducted October 22 - 24, 2010. Applications must be received by the AAPD by March 1, 2010.
Further information on the Institute for Teaching and Learning, may be found at their website: http://www.academicleaders.org.
In addition to attendance at the ITL, AAPD Master Clinicians will be able to attend the Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry as part of the scholarship program.
