Homes of Hawaiian Royalty Revisited

Since 1845, Honolulu has served as capitol to the various forms of government - kingdom, republic, territory and state - that has presided over these islands. Our ruling monarchs made their homes and seat of government in this unique city. Today, Honolulu is a diverse cosmopolitan city, one that understands and appreciates her past. We are privileged to share our heritage, we are honored to share our past; as you discover and enjoy the Homes of Hawaiian Royalty Revisited. Completed in 1882, 'Iolani Palace was home to King Kalakaua and his sister Queen Lili'uokalani. 'Iolani Palace is the only royal palace in America. During its time, the palace hosted many elaborate dinners and royal celebrations in the latest style and fashion of the era. It showcased many of the latest inventions of the period, including electric lighting (less than seven years after Edison invented the first practical incandescent bulb), and a modern communications system that included the recently invented telephone. Today, portraits, furnishings, and monarchy era regalia are on display. Hanaiakamalama (meaning "foster child of the moon") is the given name for the historic Queen Emma Summer Palace in lovely Nu'uanu Valley. King Kamehameha IV, the queen consort and their young son, Prince Albert Edward, enjoyed some of their happiest times together here, as a retreat from the rigors of court life in hot and dusty Honolulu of the 1850's. The Summer Palace is preserved by the Daughters of Hawai`i in a charming Hawaiian-Victorian setting. We lunch at the Willows, nestled within the heart of historic Moili'ili, one acre of lush tropical gardens, native Hawaiian flowers, and cascading waterfalls. It was originally known as Kapa'akea Springs and was the property of Kamamalu (sister of Kamehameha IV and V). The site is located over lava tubes that formed natural caverns, bringing the fresh water springs from the mountains that formed the property's pools. In past times, Hawaiian royalty loved to come and swim in the ponds. Savor Executive Chef Jay Matsukawa's delicious Hawaiian-American cuisine. Tour Available: Thursday, May 21

Digital Workshop: Photography Walk

Digital photography is a mainstay in most families today, the new and - for most - easy way to preserve and record family experiences. Even though most digital camera manufactures say it's simply look and shoot, there really is a lot more to consider, especially if you have, or want to have artistic flair in your family pictures. So it's time to go beyond thumbs covering the lens or red-eyed children smiling back at the camera. With that it mind, welcome to our Digital Workshop - Photography Walk.

The goal is not so much to show you how to play with all of the technical bells and whistles that your camera has to offer. Rather it's looking at your artistic eye, your definition of perspective, the understanding of photographic composition. Background, foreground, lighting - all come into play - and you don't have to lug around tons of expensive equipment to achieve memorable results. That in essence is the purpose and result of this class.

We begin with an orientation to the creative process, an encouragement to your creativity. Then, led by your professional photographer guide, you'll go and explore your temporary island home. With a little guidance, and your natural creative flair, objects, scenes and landscapes come newly alive. After a nice walk outing, it's back to the ballroom where your picture are downloaded, gently and constructively critiqued, and then shared with the rest of the workshop.

Hawaiian Antiquities - Ipu Heke

In Hawaiian culture the ipu heke or gourd repository is treasured and respected. In the home or in the workplace only good thoughts are allowed when the ipu heke is opened. The ipu heke will release its stored optimism, and continue to gather the positive energy around it. All negative thoughts are cast aside and not allowed in. An ipu heke will never become empty, as long you keep the spirit of optimism alive. Let our kupuna, our respected elders share with you the true spirit of aloha.

In ancient times the ipu or gourd was prevalent throughout the Hawaiian lifestyle. Used as a food source, made into various containers and musical instruments, the ipu was as diverse in usage as it is in genus. Culturally and symbolically, the ipu says much about Hawai'i and her people. The ipu has a hard life. Born in the dark soil, struggling to push its way up into the light. Upon entering into our world the ipu is at the mercy of forces it can not control; too much sun, too little rain, insects, pestilence, or scavenging animals. The ipu that survived nature's test is strong, without blemish, and proud. The ipu that survived possessed an eternal optimistic view on life; what could be more difficult than what had already transpired? Hawaiians recognized this quality, this spirit, and respected the ipu for it. Because of this, the ipu was chosen to store knowledge, wisdom and pure thoughts.
