A Post-Annual Meeting Joint Symposium Sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Orthodontic Society
Located on the Island Maui

Course Summary

This symposium will address the major issues surrounding early treatment of pediatric adverse craniofacial growth and malocclusion, with equal emphasis on current mechanics and the evidence-base of research. The speakers will review diagnostic protocols, possible intervention therapies, and several approaches/strategies for the needs of the young and growing child dental patient. Current evidence suggests that two-step orthodontic treatment beginning in Phase I dentition provides excellent results often preventing unnecessary removal of permanent teeth in Phase II. However, controversy still remains among practitioners on appropriate treatment options and these differences serve as the backdrop for this topical and lively symposium. This symposium will feature nationally and internationally-recognized pediatric clinicians who have successfully incorporated full orthodontic treatment into their practices and lecture on the benefits and options of early interceptive modalities.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the symposium, the participant will

  • Understand the AAPD guidelines for clinical evaluation and treatment, as well as the evidence base of literature on which the guidelines were established.
  • Understand the protocols for evaluation and diagnosis of the child patient with adverse skeletal growth, dental arch length deficiencies, habits and their sequelae and the literature base concerning these findings.
  • Learn effective and efficient treatment techniques that can be used to redirect adverse growth patterns, develop dental arches, improve molar relationships and utilize preventive treatment techniques for adverse growth patients.
  • Be able to evaluate future continuing education and make decisions about future coursework in this exciting area of pediatric practice.

Continuing Education Credit

Attendees are eligible for 8 hours of continuing education credit. AAPD and AOS are ADA CERP Recognized Providers .

Accreditation, Conflict of Interest and Other Notices

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is recognized (May 2007 - June 2011) by the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) to provide continuing education opportunities for dentists.

The AAPD specifies the maximum amount of continuing education credits as defined for each course. Members should only claim credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

While offering the continuing education credits described, courses are not intended to provide extensive training or lead to any type of certification in pediatric dentistry.

The AAPD does not certify competence or endorse performance of any skills taught during these courses. Furthermore, the courses do not supersede independent medical professional judgment.

The AAPD resolves to ensure that its educational mission and its continuing education programs are not influenced by the special interests of any corporation or individual associated with its programs. While having a financial interest or professional affiliation with a corporation does not necessarily influence a speaker's presentation, accreditation standards and good judgment require that any relationship be disclosed to the audience. Any potential conflict of interest will be made known to the participants at the beginning of the program and in any course materials.
