AAPD Names New Board Officers and Trustees at AAPD 2015 in Seattle

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), the leading authority on children’s oral health, inducted the new president and other officers and trustees for the new AAPD board of trustees in Seattle, Wash., on May 24, 2015.
Robert L. Delarosa, D.D.S., President.
Delarosa is the founding partner in a group private practice in Baton Rouge, La. He is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and received his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He was board certified in 1991 and is a fellow in the American College of Dentists. Delarosa has had leadership roles in numerous dental professional organizations at the state and regional levels, and was the Louisiana state leader for the AAPD Head Start Oral Health Initiative. His presidential agenda will include the creation of a task force to investigate the growing debt burden of recent graduates and potential avenues of relief, as well as continuing to act upon the recommendations of the previously created task forces, specifically identifying future volunteer leaders and enhancing chapter relations. And finally, he will continue to work closely with the board and staff to sustain the value of AAPD membership and organizational strength.
Jade Miller, D.D.S., President-Elect. Miller received his dental degree from the University of the Pacific Dental School and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Children’s Hospital Medical Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. In addition to his service to multiple dental organizations, he has held appointments with the Nevada State Board of Health, the Medicaid Medical Advisory Committee, and Nevada Board of Dental Examiners. He is an associate faculty member at University of the Pacific School of Dentistry, University of Washington School of Dentistry and University of Nevada School of Medicine. Miller is a graduate of AAPD’s Leadership Institute and Advanced Leadership Institute. He is in private practice in Reno, Nev.
James D. Nickman, D.D.S., Vice President.
Nickman earned his dental and Master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota, and was board certified in 2002. He is the chair of the Minnesota Dental Association Barriers to Care Committee and serves on the MINDENPAC Board. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He currently serves as the AAPD Public Policy Advocate for Minnesota. Nickman maintains a private practice in the Twin Cities and teaches part-time at the University of Minnesota.
Joe Castellano, D.D.S., Secretary-Treasurer.
Castellano received his dental degree from the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency and specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas (UTHSC-SA). He is board certified in pediatric dentistry. Castellano is an assistant Clinical Professor for the Department of Developmental Dentistry at UTHSC-SA Dental School. He is a graduate of the AAPD Leadership Institute and the AAPD Advanced Leadership Institute. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists. Castellano is in private practice in Laredo, Texas.
Edward H. Moody, Jr., D.D.S., Immediate Past President.
Moody received his dental degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Medical College of Virginia. A diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry (ABPD) and a fellow of the American College of Dentists, he is active in numerous professional dental organizations. A Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, his community activities include a term on the Executive Board of the Great Smoky Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America, positions on numerous church councils and committees, and a long standing membership on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Morristown. He is in private practice in Morristown, Tenn.
Sara L. Filstrup D.D.S., M.S., Parliamentarian.
Filstrup is a board certified pediatric dentist in private practice in Cambridge, Mass. She received her M.S. from The University of Michigan School of Dentistry, was a fellow at C.S. Mott Children’s Health Center, Flint, Michigan, and received her dental degree from The University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She is a recipient of two of AAPD’s prestigious awards: the Jerome B. Miller / Crest-Oral-B "For the Kids Award" and the Merle C. Hunter Leadership Award, as well as the Award for Excellence in Pediatric Dentistry, Kenneth A. Easlick Society. She is a graduate of the AAPD Leadership Institute and of the ADA/Forsyth Institute’s Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry Course.
Bruce Weiner, D.D.S., Southwestern Trustee.
Weiner, a board-certified pediatric dentist with a private practice in Fort Worth, Texas, graduated from The Virginia Military Institute with a U.S. Air Force commission and a four-year military commitment. He received his dental degree from the University of Maryland’s Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, and completed his pediatric dentistry residency there following military service. He was the base preventive dental officer at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, developing a comprehensive oral-health program implemented in area schools by the base dental clinic, school nurses and teachers. He has taught pediatric dentistry at Baylor College of Dentistry.
John L. Gibbons, D.M.D., Western District Trustee.
Gibbons is in private practice is Tacoma and Silverdale, Wash. He received his dental degree from Washington University of St. Louis and completed his pediatric dental residency at Oregon Health Sciences University. He is an affiliate instructor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry, is a provider for the Washington State ABCD program and dedicates part of his Tacoma practice for Medicaid-enrolled children. He is the AAPD Public Policy Advocate for Washington State.
Amr M. Moursi, D.D.S., Ph.D., Academic At-Large Trustee.
Moursi is Chairman of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the New York University College of Dentistry and an Attending Dentist at the New York University Langone Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital Center in New York. Dr. Moursi received his dental degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, did his pediatric dentistry residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and then earned a Ph.D. in Craniofacial Biology from the University of California at San Francisco. He is a board certified pediatric dentist and a fellow of the AAPD and of the International College of Dentists. He also maintains a private practice in New York City.
Leila C. Younger, D.D.S., M.S., American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Director.
Younger, a board-certified pediatric dentist with a private practice in the Chicago suburbs, is a Clinical Assistant Professor of pediatric dentistry at The University of Southern California Ostrow School of Dentistry. She received her dental degree from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, completed her residency at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago and received a Master’s degree from Northwestern University. Younger has been an examiner for the Oral Clinical Examination and on the examination committee of the ABPD since 2006. She became an ADA Evidence Based Dentistry Champion in 2012 and is a member of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network.
