The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) has collaborated with the DALE Foundation, the official affiliate of the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc. (DANB), on a new online continuing education (CE) program for dental assistants: Behavioral Guidance and Management for the Pediatric Dental Patient.

The online, interactive course guides learners through a pre-assessment of 10 questions, instruction in relevant topics and a post-course assessment of 50 questions. Participants earn six CE credits upon successful completion of the course. It was developed by the DALE Foundation and AAPD subject matter experts: Sarat Thikkurissy, D.D.S., M.S.; Man Wai Ng, D.D.S., M.P.H.; Tiffany Benton, CDA; with pediatric dental office manager Amy Paundlay, CDA.

"Working with the DALE Foundation to develop this course brought together a team from varied backgrounds, with a singular vision to create something that will have lasting impact on dental care for children," said Thikkurissy. "The course is critical because it helps assistants understand their role in the dental team, with respect to behavior guidance. Additionally, since the course is rooted in the AAPD clinical guidelines on behavior management, it represents the best summative knowledge we have as a profession."

During the course, learners will review essential topics and learn how to:

  • Understand age-specific mental, emotional and social developmental features of the pediatric dental patient
  • Recognize the importance of flexibility and adaptability when working with pediatric and special needs patients
  • Communicate and respond appropriately when faced with challenging behaviors in pediatric and special needs patients
  • Apply commonly used behavior management techniques to virtual interactions with pediatric and special needs patients

As with other offerings from the DALE Foundation, the Behavioral Guidance and Management for the Pediatric Dental Patient course includes printable notes and valuable resources, like AAPD guidelines and sample informed consent forms.

The DALE Foundation is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. To learn more, visit www.dalefoundation.org or www.youtube.com/dalefoundation.
